Notice of Smog Advisory

Notice of Smog Advisory

July 19, 2011

News
Effective immediately a Smog Advisory has been issued by the Ministry of the Environment for the following forecast region:
  • Windsor-Essex-Chatham-Kent
Hot, hazy and humid conditions combined with light southerly winds blowing air pollution from the U.S. into Ontario is resulting in high smog levels across parts of southwestern Ontario.
This advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
  • A Smog Advisory is related to the Air Quality Index (AQI), which rates how clean the air is. The AQI scale ranges from 0 to 100+. Higher numbers mean higher health risks.
  • A Smog Advisory is issued in your region when the AQI is expected to reach 50 in the next 24 hours. It can be lifted once the AQI is expected to reach or drops below 50.
  • Smog is made up of a complex mixture of air pollutants that are sometimes visible, such as a brownish-yellow haze over cities; sometimes not. The two main ingredients of smog are ground-level ozone (O3) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5).

Colchester Splashpad Grand Opening & Ribbon Ceremony

Essex – 07/15/2011

The Town of Essex will hold a Grand Opening & Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Saturday July 23rd to celebrate the opening of the new and fun-filled splashpad located in the Colchester Harbour Park off of County Road 50 in Colchester Centre.

According to Mayor Ron McDermott, the Grand Opening Celebration is being held with the goal of “providing an opportunity to invite the families of the community to experience the exciting new Colchester Centre Splashpad for the first time as well as to acknowledge those who played a key role in the project. We especially would like to thank the Government of Ontario who made a significant contribution to the project through an Investing in Ontario Grant. With recent improvements to the Harbour, the addition of a new play structure last year and this new Splashpad, Colchester Centre has truly become an exciting family destination right on the shores of Lake Erie.”

The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will take place at 12 noon. There will be many other activities taking place all day in conjunction with the Explore the Shore event including a Children’s Festival on both Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Kingston Brigantine Tall Ship will also be at Colchester Harbour and offering cruises to the public. Cruise spots are available on Saturday July 23rd

Construction of the Colchester Centre Splashpad is now complete and the Pumphouse/Public Washroom Building will be completed by July 28th, 2011. The Splashpad was designed by RTS Systems and is comprised of many exciting water features as well as a water recirculation system for water conservation.
